Jonesboro, Georgia, South of Atlanta

Tonight, my troops will begin the long walk back to Atlanta. We are moving slowing enforcing as we go as the enemy is close by. I intend to eat as much forage and collect as much food as possible, so as to deny the enemy. Wheeler is still in our rear and being pursued by cavalry and infantry. I wish to give my troops a month to rest and refurbish.

Hood cannot be attacked in his current position without a dangerous extension of my lines. He will not leave his lines to attack. I will leave the next move to him and hope to some day catch him in the open.
