We will go about the systematic destruction of the town and the railroads. Hurlbut is sending A J Smith’s division to destroy 12 miles of the Selma railroad. General Veatch is responsible for destroying the railroad 6 miles north to Marison Station. The cavalry under Winslow will cover General Smith’s movements and look for signs of Sooy Smith’s cavalry.
General McPherson has ordered General Leggett to destroy the Southern Railroad to the west as far as Chunky’s Station, burning the bridges, culverts, &c., and damaging the road so thoroughly as to make it impossible for the enemy to repair it in months. At any one time, half the men will be on guard while the other half work.
General Crocker is to head south to Enterprise, Mississippi and send a party of infantry supported by cavalry to Quitman, there to destroy a large railroad bridge across the Chickasawha River. Enterprise is not to be destroyed other than the railroad and the railroad station.
