Jackson, Mississippi

TO ELLEN EWING SHERMAN
Jackson Mississippi
February 7, 1864

Dearest Ellen,

I am here again and a new burning has been inflicted on this afflicted town. We had some pretty Skirmishes on our way out and we handled the enemy’s cavalry rather roughly. No Infantry has yet been encountered, but I expect them on our way east. Weather is beautiful & roads good; all of us in fine condition. I am on the point of sending a Courier back and avail myself of the opportunity to send you this surprise message and the assurance of my unfailing love.

Yours ever
W. T. Sherman
