In the hurry to get to Chattanooga to relieve Rosecrans, John E Smith’s Division of the 17th accompanied my troops. General Tuttle’s Division of the 15th stayed with General Hurlbut. In order to reconcile the commands without moving the divisions, I have transferred both divisions to new commands.
