Bridgeport, Alabama

In the hurry to get to Chattanooga to relieve Rosecrans, John E Smith’s Division of the 17th accompanied my troops. General Tuttle’s Division of the 15th stayed with General Hurlbut. In order to reconcile the commands without moving the divisions, I have transferred both divisions to new commands.

SPECIAL ORDERS, 
HEADQUARTERS DEPARTMENT AND ARMY OF THE Tennessee, 

Numbers 25. 
Bridgeport, Alabama, December 20, 1863

I. The Second Division, Seventeenth Army Corps, Brigadier General John E. Smith commanding, is hereby transferred to the Fifteenth Army Corps, and will be known as the Third Division of that corps.

II. The Third Division of the Fifteenth Army Corps, Brigadier General J. M. Tuttle commanding, is hereby transferred to the Sixteenth Army Corps.
