Vicksburg, Mississippi

Immediately upon hearing the request for reinforcements for Rosecrans from General Halleck, I ordered Osterhuas’ Division to march to Vicksburg. Most arrived by the night of the 22 and embarked on boats for Memphis yesterday. The remainder of the division embarked this morning. I would much prefer sending an army corps to sending detachments from each. But this could not be done without much delay. Grant plans to send additional divisions. I will return to the Big Black River to make oversee the preparations and give the necessary orders.
