Camp on the Big Black River, Near Vicksburg, Mississippi

As to the Press of America it is a shame and a reproach to a civilized People. When a man is too lazy to work, & too cowardly to steal he turns Editor & manufactures public opinion, and blackmails for a living. I begin to feel a higher opinion of myself that I am their butt. I shall begin to Suspect myself of being in a decline when a compliment appears in type. I know in what estimation I am held by my Peers, those who have been with me all the time, and they are competent to judge, from privates to Major Generals.
