Thursday Night, July 16, 1863

My expedition to the North reports that they destroyed pontoon bridges, two miles of rail around Canton 300 feet of trestle and birdgework and 13 railroad buildings. Johnston has sent out a brass band to serenade the troops. The ammunition is just now up and we will shell them in the morning.

There is commotion in Jackson including a very large fire. Johnston may be preparing to leave. We will know tomorrow.
